International Women’s Day 2026 – Shout out to South Island trans women

What happens when a community decides—truly decides—to build its future together? On Southern Vancouver Island, the answer begins with a single invitation: Show up, stand with us, and help shape what’s next.

For more than a decade, I’ve had the honour of helping organize women’s events across Southern Vancouver Island. Over those years, I’ve watched something beautiful take shape: women reaching toward each other, across differences, across identities, across lived experiences — building community on purpose.

This year’s International Women’s Day 2026: Women Building Community gathering continues that tradition.

This year’s International Women’s Day on Southern Vancouver Island isn’t just another gathering—it’s a moment shaped by years of women reaching toward one another intentionally, inclusively, and bravely. Across kitchens, classrooms, wellness centres, and community halls, women have been weaving a culture where every voice matters—especially those who have too often been left at the edges.

A few months ago, a woman told me she had never attended a community women’s event because she didn’t believe she would be welcomed as her whole self. When she finally attended, she felt something shift—an ease, a warmth, an unspoken “we’re glad you’re here.” That moment reflects our bigger truth: inclusion isn’t theoretical. It’s lived, offered, received, and built upon.

Community, especially women’s community, is like a tidepool along the coast—shaped by many forces, held together by resilience, and constantly replenished by what moves through it. Each woman brings her story, her history, her learning, her care. And when one woman steps forward, the pool changes; it becomes more alive, more vibrant, more reflective of the whole shoreline.

This is why this year’s IWD carries a special call:
A heartfelt, open-armed shout‑out to trans women across the South Island.
Not symbolic, not theoretical—real, local, lived women whose presence deepens the strength of our region’s feminist landscape. Women’s groups, organizations, and event leaders on Southern Vancouver Island have been intentionally inclusive for years. The door is not only open—it has been held open by women who believe community is strongest when everyone is welcome.

Women’s leadership thrives when diversity is present. Women’s safety deepens when trust is shared. Women’s futures expand when trans women stand beside cis women, elders alongside youth, newcomers with long-timers. The big idea is simple:
When every woman is present, every woman rises.

And so this event—shaped by speakers, collective activities, local food, conversation, and shared learning—is more than a celebration. It is an act of co‑creation, a renewal of commitment, and an invitation to belong.

If the big idea is that community is built through presence, then the next steps are beautifully simple:

• Step toward the circle.
Attend the event—especially if you’ve hesitated before.
• Bring someone with you.
Women build community together, not alone.
• Listen and be listened to.
Your voice is part of the fabric of the South Island.
• Make space for someone new.
A small gesture can transform someone else’s experience.
• Choose one conversation to continue after the event.
Community thrives on sustained connection.

Whether you are an elder, a single parent, a youth beginning your journey, a woman healing, a leader, or someone longing for a safe and welcoming space—this event is for you.
And to the trans women of Southern Vancouver Island: your presence strengthens us all. Please join us.
