About the Puppetry Program
Give a character a voice, catch a telling moment on camera, or turn an everyday mishap into a scene that makes people laugh. With the Common Thread Troupe, you have people to try it with. Bring your experience, or come ready to learn.
Puppets and video belong together
Behind the camera is a creative role every bit as important as bringing the puppet to life. Our Bard/Engineer combines storytelling with the technical work of video. Performer and video maker learn to work together so the story comes across on screen. That partnership is one reason we train in television-style puppetry.
If you want to make a career in puppetry or video, working with the troupe gives you people to practise with and work to learn from, even as you pursue opportunities of your own. If you are here for friendship, creative challenges and serious fun, there is room for you too.
Eight people, a troupe of your own
We build one troupe at a time, with eight people whose interests shape what they make together. There is no application deadline: whenever eight people are ready, we can convene a troupe and mark its beginning with a formation ceremony.
A troupe with five or more Company Puppeteers becomes a company troupe, entered in the co-op’s register for potential touring work. Paid tours depend on funding and opportunities, and we need a troupe ready before we can take one on. Meanwhile, there are characters to develop, scenes to rehearse and videos to make. You can begin doing the work you enjoy now.
