3 Mothers Medicine Camps (3MMC): A Place for All Generations to Heal Together

3MMC is Tau Wellness Cooperative’s flagship cross-generational wellness initiative, designed to bring together diverse age groups and genders in a shared space of healing, creativity, and connection. Rooted in the findings of the Our Community Health Initiative—a participatory research project with the University of Victoria and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre—these camps respond to what we call “the missing middle of mental healthcare.”

Each of the four core programs within 3MMC can be offered independently in community settings, workplaces, or wellness hubs. When brought together, they form a dynamic, tent-based camp experience that fosters intergenerational learning, trauma-informed care, and community celebration.

The Four Pillars of 3MMC:

  • Living Eldership: Elders engage in meaningful arts and crafts that serve both personal expression and community contribution. Many of the handcrafted items—such as puppets, costumes, and set pieces—are created in collaboration with youth and used directly in the Betwix’d Improv Puppet Troupe. This creative exchange fosters mentorship, storytelling, and skill-sharing between generations. Elders also contribute puppets designed for toddlers, which are used in bonding activities to support early cognitive development and emotional connection between caregivers and children.
  • Betwix’d Improv Puppet Troupe: Youth aged 13–19 explore identity, creativity, and emotional expression through improv and puppetry. The troupe uses puppets and props crafted by elders, creating a living bridge between generations. Guided by elder mentors, youth develop performances that reflect shared community narratives, fostering empathy, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
  • All Gender Birthing & Bonding: New and expectant families receive support for instinctual birth and postnatal recovery, guided by HypnoBirthing-certified educators. Puppets designed by elders are used in bonding exercises with toddlers to enhance cognitive development, emotional regulation, and caregiver-child attachment. This program centers the wisdom of lived experience and offers inclusive care for all gender identities.
  • All Gender Vocal Practices: Adults seeking gender-affirming voice support can access tools and training to express themselves authentically and confidently. Puppets are used as playful, low-pressure tools to help participants “try on” different voices—allowing exploration of tone, pitch, and persona without the need for immediate personal commitment. This approach fosters vocal freedom and self-discovery in a safe, affirming environment.

Whether delivered as standalone programs or woven together into a full-day camp, 3MMC offers hands-on activities, peer support, and opportunities for personal restoration. It’s a space where elders, youth, new parents, and gender-diverse adults come together to heal and grow in community.
