Before you begin
Complete the entry orientation and supervisor agreement, and study the units in order. Your Year 1 demonstration must be approved before you begin Year 2. If you have equivalent prior learning, your Shihan will document the decision. Completing this course does not establish external professional registration; external credentials and legal authority are verified separately.
What you’ll learn
1. Purpose and suitability
Review the distinctions among hypnosis, therapeutic use and self-development. A course title does not authorize clinical practice. For a learning activity, choose an ordinary goal and obtain Shihan approval of suitability, scope and consent. Diagnosis, trauma treatment and medical concerns belong with appropriately qualified practitioners.
- Understand Hypnosis & Trance: Explore the science, history, and myths of hypnosis. Learn how trance states naturally occur and how to facilitate them for positive change. Example: Recognize trance in everyday activities like driving or reading. Reference: Hypnotherapy Student Manual, p.18-25
- Build Therapeutic Rapport: Master the art of building trust and rapport, essential for effective hypnotherapy. Example: Use pacing and leading to match client communication styles. Reference: Shihan Manual, p.29-35
- Ethics & Client Safety: Apply the IACT Code of Ethics and best practices for client safety, confidentiality, and informed consent. Example: Implement clear intake and consent forms. Reference: Student Manual, p.12-16
Practice activity: Write a scope statement for a fictional presentation-confidence activity.
2. Language and metaphor
A metaphor offers a possibility rather than a command or factual revelation. Use the participant’s chosen goal and invite them to reject imagery that does not fit. Annotate your language to show where permission and choice appear. Do not hide instructions or frame disagreement as resistance to overcome.
- Induction & Deepening Techniques: Practice a variety of hypnotic inductions, including progressive relaxation, Elman, and guided imagery. Example: Lead a client through a progressive muscle relaxation induction. Reference: Student Manual, p.86-98
- Hypnotic Language & Metaphor: Harness the power of hypnotic language, indirect suggestion, and transformational storytelling. Example: Use metaphors to bypass resistance and foster change. Reference: Udemy Hypnotic Metaphor Mastery
Practice activity: Create a brief original metaphor and identify how the participant can change or decline it.
3. Review and learning record
Observe a Shihan-approved demonstration and note how it opens, checks consent and closes. Reflect on communication and boundaries, not supposed access to hidden truth. Regression is covered as a topic for study; this course does not instruct you to recover memories. Keep the learning record separate from claims of certification.
- Regression & Resource Techniques: Safely facilitate regression, parts therapy, and resource installation for resolving past issues and building strengths. Example: Guide a client to revisit a positive childhood memory for confidence. Reference: Student Manual, p.163-167
- Self-Hypnosis & Client Empowerment: Teach self-hypnosis and empower clients to use trance for ongoing personal development. Example: Introduce the Betty Erickson self-hypnosis method. Reference: Student Manual, p.134
- Practice Management & Professional Growth: Learn business basics, ethical marketing, and how to build a sustainable hypnotherapy practice. Example: Develop a client intake process and ethical advertising plan. Reference: Shihan Manual, p.132-137
Practice activity: Compare your proposed plan with the demonstration and revise one section using supervisor feedback.
