Before you begin

Complete the entry orientation and supervisor agreement, and study the units in order. Your Year 1 demonstration must be approved before you advance to Year 2. If you have equivalent prior learning, your Shihan will document the decision. Completing this course does not establish external professional registration; external credentials and legal authority are verified separately.

What you’ll learn

1. Attention and agency

This unit introduces attention, suggestion and self-hypnosis. Describe the planned experience plainly and keep choice central. Being absorbed in an activity does not establish a special power or guarantee a result. The learning aim is to understand the process and its limits, not to prove suggestibility or achieve a prescribed depth.

  • Understand Hypnosis: Grasp the history, definitions, and myths of hypnosis, and distinguish fact from fiction. Example: Identify common misconceptions and explain the difference between stage hypnosis and clinical practice. Reference: Hypnotherapy Student Manual, Ch. 1-2
  • Experience Trance: Learn to recognize and calibrate natural trance states in daily life. Example: Notice signs of trance during routine activities like driving or reading. Reference: Alter Your Experience, Ch. 2

Practice activity: Rewrite a controlling instruction as an invitation that can be declined.

2. Preparing a suitable learning activity

Choose an ordinary self-development goal such as preparing calmly for a presentation. Agree suitability and the exercise with the Shihan before practicing. Use a safe stationary setting; do not practice while driving or doing work that needs alertness. Include an ordinary stopping and reorienting plan. People who become distressed should stop and consult the Shihan.

  • Master Language Patterns: Use hypnotic language, suggestion, and metaphor to influence experience and behavior. Example: Practice embedded commands and indirect suggestions for self-motivation. Reference: The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1
  • Induce Self-Hypnosis: Apply step-by-step induction and deepening techniques for self-hypnosis. Example: Use progressive relaxation or guided imagery to enter trance. Reference: Udemy Self Hypnosis Mastery, Section 2
  • Set Effective Goals: Formulate well-formed outcomes and use self-hypnosis for habit change, confidence, and stress relief. Example: Create a self-hypnosis script for overcoming procrastination. Reference: Hypnotherapy Trainer Manual, Outcome Specification
  • Integrate NLP & Mind Games: Explore NLP-based exercises and mind games to expand awareness and flexibility. Example: Use guided fantasy or polarity integration for personal growth. Reference: Mind Games – The Guide to Inner Space

Practice activity: Prepare a plan naming goal, setting, consent, stopping point and support contact; do not include trauma processing.

3. Reflecting without overstating results

Use the approved study guide to observe the Shihan’s demonstration. After an authorized self-practice, describe your experience in your own words: what you tried, what you noticed, and whether it helped your chosen goal. A single experience cannot establish treatment efficacy. Adjust the plan using feedback instead of escalating intensity.

  • Practice Ethically: Understand the ethical guidelines, boundaries, and responsibilities of self-hypnosis. Example: Apply the IACT Code of Ethics to your self-practice. Reference: Hypnotherapy Student Manual, Ethics Section
  • Evaluate & Reflect: Develop self-awareness and track your progress using feedback, journaling, and self-assessment. Example: Keep a hypnosis journal to monitor changes in mood and behavior. Reference: Udemy Self Hypnosis Mastery, Section 5

Practice activity: Compare an observation with an explanation and label which is supported by your log.
