Before you begin
Complete the entry orientation and supervisor agreement, and study the units in order. Your Year 1 demonstration must be approved before you begin Year 2. If you have equivalent prior learning, your Shihan will document the decision. Completing this course does not establish external professional registration; external credentials and legal authority are verified separately.
What you’ll learn
1. Rapport is checked, not assumed
This unit covers matching, pacing and sensory observation. Use those ideas critically: a posture or expression is not a reliable reading of another person’s mind. Ask what feels comfortable. Avoid imitation that feels artificial and avoid treating eye contact as a universal sign of trust.
- Master Mirroring & Matching: Subtly reflect clients’ body language and speech to build unconscious trust. Example: Matching a client’s relaxed posture to create comfort.
- Apply Pacing & Leading: Align with clients’ current state and gently guide them toward relaxation or insight. Example: Pacing a client’s breathing before introducing calming techniques.
- Enhance Sensory Acuity: Notice subtle shifts in physiology and behavior for responsive, personalized care. Example: Observing micro-expressions to adjust your approach.
Practice activity: Separate three observable behaviors from the assumptions someone might make about them.
2. Clear questions and permission
Reflect the participant’s words, clarify ambiguous requests and ask permission before proposing an activity. Touch-based cues or anchors require specific consent; prefer a verbal or self-chosen cue in peer learning. Rapport must never be a method of bypassing someone’s choice.
- Utilize Anchoring: Create positive emotional associations using touch, words, or gestures. Example: Using a gentle tap to anchor a sense of peace during Reiki.
- Use Meta-Model Questions: Clarify vague language and uncover limiting beliefs. Example: Asking “What specifically makes you feel anxious?”
- Integrate Cultural Sensitivity & Ethics: Apply NLP techniques respectfully, honoring diverse backgrounds and values. Example: Adapting communication styles for different cultural contexts.
Practice activity: Practise asking what a participant means by “more balanced” without supplying your interpretation.
3. Repairing a mismatch
If your language or approach does not fit, acknowledge it and ask what would help. A participant may prefer quiet, a different pace or no session. Make the correction visible in your plan. Review how your own assumptions affected the interaction rather than judging the participant.
- Practice Reframing: Help clients see challenges from new perspectives, unlocking solutions. Example: Reframing “I’m stuck” as “I’m ready for change.”
- Facilitate Holistic Healing: Combine NLP rapport skills with Reiki for deeper, more effective sessions. Example: Using rapport to create a safe space for energy work.
Practice activity: Rehearse an apology and revised agreement after an unwanted suggestion.
